DeLauro Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Affirming Women's Right to an Accessible, Safe Abortion

Issues: Women Abortion

Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that Louisiana's admitting-privileges law was medically unnecessary and significantly limited access to abortion:

"The Supreme Court of the United States' ruling to uphold the constitution is an incredible victory not only for women but for our entire nation. This case should have never come up. Consistent with the 2016 ruling in Whole Women's Health v. Hellerstedt on Texas' admitting privileges law, the Louisiana law places an undue burden on women and their providers. Laws like this are part of an ongoing, national coordinated effort by anti-abortion groups and politicians to enact laws to legislate the right to abortion out of existence.

"We are at a critical juncture for abortion rights in America. Abortion is health care and a fundamental right. Regardless of where they live or how much money they make, individuals deserve the right to control their own bodies and future and to get the healthcare that they want and need. When women can make decisions about their own reproductive healthcare, including whether and when to have children, they have autonomy over their lives and their economic security.

"While I applaud the court's decision, we must recognize that it is rooted in a desire to stand by precedent rather than a commitment to upholding women's right to choose. While clinics remain open, I will continue the fight to ensure abortions are available and accessible for all."
