King Responds to Supreme Court Decision to Follow 2016 Precedent, Protect Women's Right to Choose

Statement

Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement after the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law that would have left the state with only one abortion clinic. The decision was reached by a 5-4 margin, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the majority on the basis of precedent established in a 2016 decision, Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt.

"Today's news is a victory for women across the nation, and a blow to anyone who would attempt to use backdoor legislation in order to take away a women's right to choose. This law was an undue burden that would have all but eliminated a Constitutionally-affirmed right from women across the state of Louisiana -- it wouldn't ban the practice of abortion, but it would make it nearly impossible to access. I am pleased that the Court has taken this position, and hope that today's ruling will put an end to the pursuit of these state laws which are solely focused on chipping away at an established Constitutional right."
