Warren, Markey, Keating Announce $19M Grant for Infrastructure Improvements at Nantucket Memorial Airport

United States Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Edward J. Markey (D-MA) along with Congressman Bill Keating (D-MA-09) announced the Department of Transportation (DOT)'s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Massachusetts a total of $19,779,594 in federal funding for the Nantucket Memorial Airport.

The Nantucket Memorial Airport will use this funding to replace a taxiway through the FAA's Airport Improvement Program (AIP). This grant is also funded by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to increase the federal share to 100 percent.

"Massachusetts' municipal airports are critical to regional economies and our communities" said Senator Warren. "This significant FAA grant will help Nantucket Memorial Airport better serve families and businesses on the Cape and Islands."

"Getting to the island of Nantucket to experience its history and beauty should not be a hurdle, for residents or visitors. I am pleased to see this generous Department of Transportation grant award, which will allow Nantucket Memorial Airport to reconstruct several of its runways and ensure greater access to this special corner of the Commonwealth for all," said Senator Markey.

"Nantucket Airport is one of the busiest in the Commonwealth, and not just during the summer months," said Congressman Keating. "The improvements allowed by this funding will ensure easy and efficient access to the Island for residents, visitors, and businesses, alike."

FAA Airport Improvement Program grants provide national, regional, and local airports with necessary funds to forward infrastructure projects including runways, taxiways, airport signage, airport lighting, and airport markings. Nantucket Memorial Airport's AIP funding is discretionary -- additional to its entitlement funding. The airport's receipt of funding is the latest federal award to local municipal airports - in April, Massachusetts regional airports received $171 million in grant funding through the CARES Act.
