Hoyer: I Fully Support the Renaming of Washington's Football Team

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement regarding the review of the Washington NFL team's name:

"I fully support the renaming of Washington's football team. I trust that the review committee has been established not to decide whether to change the name of the team but to decide what the new name will be. In the spirit of it never being too late to do the right thing, the present name, which has clearly been used to demean Native Americans, is an affront to all people who believe that everyone ought to be treated with respect. Racist names and symbols have no place in our society, and their presence among our nation's professional sports teams is unacceptable. The review ought to be completed prior to the beginning of the coming NFL season."
