Timmons Statement on Police Reform Legislation

Statement

Date: June 26, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman William Timmons (SC-04) released the following statement regarding police reform legislation before Congress.

"We have a real opportunity to enact meaningful legislation on behalf of the American people to restore the broken trust between law enforcement and the communities of color they serve. On Wednesday, Senator Tim Scott offered Senate Democrats votes on as many amendments as they wanted to his legislation, the JUSTICE Act. They refused his offer. In the People's House, the majority has denied the minority the opportunity to offer any amendments and shut us out of the drafting process. It appears my colleagues across the aisle do not want to work together to find lasting solutions and instead are seeking to drive a wedge between the American people which they can use in November.

"Even in divided government, the American people deserve and expect us to work together on their behalf, especially in a critical moment such as this. Instead, it is politics as usual in Washington. We do not need a Democrat bill. We do not need a Republican bill. We need an American bill. We must not let this moment pass and do nothing."
