Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Issues: K-12 Education

Today, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) celebrated a $100,000 grant awarded by the USDA's Farm to School program to Out Teach. Out Teach (out-teach.org) is a national nonprofit that coaches and inspires teachers to use outdoor spaces to boost student performance, especially in Science. This $100,000 grant will help Out Teach develop and deploy a program that embeds nutrition into the Science and Math curricula at 14 CMS schools this upcoming school year. By empowering teachers to lead hands-on outdoor lessons and work with students to grow fresh vegetables, the program encourages students to eat healthy and make healthier decisions when ordering food.

"I am excited to share that our Adams Hunger Initiative partners at Out Teach earned a USDA grant to embed nutrition education into outdoor Science and Math lessons," said Congresswoman Adams. "Out Teach empowers schools use outdoor spaces for instruction, which is important work as schools plan to reopen. One of the best ways to address our ongoing hunger crisis is to give communities the resources to eat healthy while teaching healthy eating habits from childhood."

Out Teach CEO, Jeanne McCarty said, "At Out Teach, we work to ensure students get all of the deep and meaningful real-world Science instruction they need to succeed in school and in life, and the science of nutrition is neglected all too often. By embedding nutrition science into fun and engaging hands-on outdoor Science and Math lessons, not only will students learn about the importance of proper nutrition, but they'll be inspired to extend what they learned in their day-to-day lives and make healthier choices."

Congresswoman Alma Adams represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District (Charlotte) and serves as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture. Additionally, she serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the House Education & Labor Committee, where she serves as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In 2015, she founded the Adams Hunger Initiative to address food insecurity in the 12th District and the greater Charlotte region.
