Issue Position: Protecting and Expanding Voting Rights

Issue Position

Charles has been a champion for protecting and expanding voting rights for years, and will continue that leadership as Senator. A strong society and effective government requires a healthy democracy. Charles supports reducing barriers to the ballot box, and ensuring that as many Americans as possible have access to the vote.

As a State Representative, Charles has been a leader in pushing for full, automatic restoration of voting rights to Kentuckians who have previously committed felonies and have completed their sentences. As Senator, he would push for federal legislation to ensure full, automatic restoration of voting rights.

Beyond restoration, Charles supports legislation to restore the full strength of the Voting Rights Act, as well as a variety of policies to increase access to the ballot box, including same-day voter registration, expanded early voting, no-excuse absentee voting, universal mail-in voting, expanded voting hours on election day, and making election day into a Federal holiday.
