Issue Position: Bold Action to Invest in America, Address Climate Change, Create Jobs, and Protect our Environment

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020
Issues: Environment

I have long pushed for our nation's transportation infrastructure to be safer, stronger, more resilient, and environmentally sustainable. Now as the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I will lead the way in implementing policies that will revitalize our economy, create jobs, and reduce carbon emissions. It's time to take swift, bold action to address climate change and I'm helping lead the charge.

The transportation sector is responsible for nearly 30 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. By transforming our transportation systems, we can effect real and long-term change.

✔️I'm proud to be an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal and Climate Emergency resolutions. As Chairman, I'm taking direct action to enact the goals of the Green New Deal through legislation and policy.

✔️At the start of 2019, I directed all six of my subcommittees to immediately investigate ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption in our nation's transportation and infrastructure.

✔️After years of work, I passed a bill that was recently signed into law to protect 30,000 acres of Oregon's old growth coastal forests, 250 miles of wild and scenic rivers, and 100,000 acres of critical steelhead and salmon habitat.

✔️We will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by utilizing the latest technology to electrify our transportation systems, develop more carbon neutral fuels, and invest in bold new renewable sources of energy like renewable hydrogen.
We can make our entire economy sustainable if we have the vision and the determination to carry it out.
