Issue Position: Pushing for Sensible Gun Laws

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020
Issues: Guns

When I was a young boy, my sister used my father's gun and took her own life. I am no stranger to the tragedy inflicted on family in the wake of gun violence. Our community came together after the devastating shootings around UCSB. For me, it underscored the need to do everything we can to keep guns away from those who pose a threat to themselves or others. We need to have commonsense reforms in place, like preventing those on the no-fly list from buying a gun, banning high-capacity magazines, and putting background checks in place to ensure guns don't fall into the hands of those who will use them to harm others.

In the House, we passed two bipartisan background check bills (H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112) that are waiting to be taken up in the Senate. I also introduced my Extreme Risk Protection Order Act (H.R. 1236), a bipartisan 'red-flag' bill that temporarily keeps guns out of the hands of people who are at risk of hurting themselves or others. We know that extreme risk laws save lives, and this bill protects due process while helping states implement laws to reduce gun deaths and injuries.

I am committed to making sure we keep our communities safe and end our nation's gun violence epidemic.
