Today, U.S. Representative Ross Spano (R-FL) introduced H.R. 7226, the "Federal Agency Sunset Act', which creates a temporary federal commission tasked with finding inefficiencies within the federal government, determining which federal agencies functions should be relegated to the private sector, and proposes recommendations for eliminating unnecessary agencies.

"The federal government is riddled with inefficient processes and redundant agencies that only cost taxpayers money. We need to make our government leaner and to serve the American public in a more efficient way," said Rep. Spano. "Our national debt has skyrocketed out of control, and I believe if we do not make serious reforms, it will be our largest national security threat, crippling us from within."

This legislation, companion bill to S. 3708 recently introduced by Sen. Rick Scott, would create a Federal Agency Sunset Commission tasked with rooting out inefficiencies in the federal government and recommending legislation in the form of Joint Resolutions to effect their recommendations. The Commission would be composed of 13 members: 6 from the House, 6 from the Senate, and the final member chosen by the President.

Sen. Rick Scott said, "This year's federal budget deficit will be the largest in the history of our nation. Congress has to get serious about how we are spending taxpayer dollars. The Federal Agency Sunset Act, which will help eliminate the waste and redundancies that we see throughout the federal government, is a common-sense way to help make Washington work. I'd like to thank Representative Spano for leading this effort in the House as we continue working to rein-in out of control spending and create more accountability for taxpayer dollars."

The bill creates a "fast track" process for Joint Resolutions drafted by the Commission, requiring them to be introduced in the Senate and House within 60 days of being proposed to Congress. They must be brought to the floor no later than 90 days after introduction. This Commission is set to expire 12 years after the date of enactment. Since elected to Congress, Rep. Spano has been working on making government more efficient and responsive to the American public. The Federal Agency Sunset Act is part of his "Great American Comeback' economic recovery plan, with a focus on getting our national debt under control.
