Rep. Donna Shalala Statement on LGBTQ Rights Decision by Supreme Court

Statement

Date: June 15, 2020
Location: Miami, FL

Today, Congresswoman Donna Shalala (FL-27) issued the following statement in response to the landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the protections of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 apply to LGBTQ people:

"Since America's inception, our history has been marked by the struggle to overcome our faults. The struggle for equality for LGTBQ people has been long and imperfect, but today's Supreme Court decision has brought us one step closer to achieving the ideal of the "more perfect union" envisioned by our founders. This ideal remains the core principle of our republic.

"Employment, perhaps more than anything, is the greatest predictor of prosperity for millions of LGBTQ people in the United States. Thanks to the hard work and leadership of organizations like SAVE in South Florida and others across the country, today we can say unequivocally that an employer who fires an individual for being gay, lesbian, or transgender is breaking the law. While our country's path to progress is hard and winding, now we are closer than ever before to delivering the promise of "liberty and justice for all."
