Rep. Cisneros Statement on President Trump Threatening to Invoke Insurrection Act

Statement

Date: June 2, 2020
Location: Fullerton, CA

Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) issued the following statement regarding President Trump threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act--deploying military troops domestically-- to stop protests over the death of George Floyd.

"After tear-gassing peaceful protesters for a photo-op, President Trump is trying to use our servicemembers to cover up his failures. As a Navy Veteran, I'm outraged that he's threatening to deploy our military against the American people. While the President thinks this is a show of strength, in reality, it is a show of weakness. The right words at the right time can make a real difference, and instead, the President is behaving like a third world military leader, not the leader of the free world.

"Our country is at a breaking point. At the same time the President vowed to protect peaceful protesters, he was forcibly removing them from Lafayette Square. Peaceful protesters should not be met with anger, intimidation, and violence. People need to be heard, our nation's wounds must be healed, and our country must unite. This moment demands real leadership, and if the President refuses to provide it, we must join together for real change."
