U.S. REP. BOBBY L. RUSH PUSHES FOR NATIONAL RECOGNITION OF ROSA PARKS WITH COMMEMORATIVE POSTAGE STAMP
Bill has over 100 co-sponsors

WASHINGTON (December 14, 2005) - Congressman Bobby L. Rush (D-IL) along with original co-sponsors, Congressmen John Conyers (D-MI) and Fred Upton (R-MI) will come together in support of H.R. 4343, which calls for a commemorative postage stamp in honor of the late mother of the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks, on Thursday, December 15, at 9:00 a.m. (EST) in Rayburn 2322.

Joining the ranks of distinguished and celebrated heroes, Rush said it is a befitting tribute for a luminary such as Rosa Parks to be immortalized in American history with her own postage stamp.

"Rosa Parks' contributions to our country's history is undeniable, but it is our duty to keep her legacy alive for posterity," said Rush. By using treasured and nationally circulated relics in American history such as the postage stamp, I am honored to introduce this legislation with the support of my congressional colleagues. This stamp will allow us to forever collect and share the story of Mrs. Parks' brave sit-down against racial injustice."

Having just celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Mrs. Parks' historic December 1, 1955 day of refusal to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Rush expressed a sense of urgency for passage of this legislation.

"Rosa Parks didn't wait for the racial climate to change in Montgomery, Alabama. Instead, her impatience with inequality changed the course of history, and I'm asking my fellow members of Congress to recognize that her heroic efforts requires swift consensus in support of this commemorative postage stamp."

The bill currently has over 100 co-sponsors.

Additionally, Congressman Rush introduced legislation urging Congress to establish a Federal legal public holiday in Rosa Parks' honor, asking States to observe a legal public holiday in her honor and encouraging schools to enhance the understanding of Rosa Parks Day with appropriate classroom instruction.
