U.S. Rep. Lawrence Announces $22 Million Grant Award to Address Homelessness in State of Michigan amid COVID-19

Press Release

Date: June 5, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Brenda L. Lawrence announced a total of $22,253,746 in grant awards to the state of Michigan towards the Emergency Solution Grant (ESG), which was established as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Of the total amount, $9,124,129 is awarded to the city of Detroit, $2,033,828 to Oakland County, and $1,295,238 to Wayne County. ESG funds are used to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic among individuals and families who are homeless or receiving homelessness assistance. The funds will also support additional homelessness assistance and prevention activities to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19.

"We must acknowledge that a significant portion of our community does not have access to the resources needed to follow CDC's recommended guidelines and states' stay-at-home orders," said Rep. Lawrence. "To avoid a second wave of COVID-19, it is vital that Michiganders continue to social distance, however this is simply impossible for those suffering from homelessness. The ESG CARES Act grant will help to protect this vulnerable group, and ensure they have the assistance needed to safely emerge from this crisis."
