Congressman Biggs' Statement on President Trump's Response to Riots across America

Date: June 1, 2020
Location: Gilbert, AZ

Tonight, President Donald Trump addressed the nation after multiple days of destructive riots across the country. Congressman Biggs reacted to the president's remarks:

"Rioters, looters, and domestic terrorists have attacked our American Republic and our ideals which provides ample room for peaceful assembly and lawful expression of our freedom of speech. When Americans feel aggrieved by either government action or inaction, they have the right to express their disapprobation. They do not, however, have the right to attack other people, steal, or destroy property.

"President Trump understands that failure to enforce our laws, protect lives and property emboldens criminals and anarchists--and distracts us from the tragic death of George Floyd. The President has reached out to Mr. Floyd's family, correctly acknowledged that Antifa is a domestic terrorist organization that must be routed, condemned the senseless violence gripping the nation and is working around the clock to restore the rule of law and to protect the fundamental rights of Americans.

"The thin blue line, Attorney General Barr, and President Trump are taking actions that will hopefully result in a return to civilization and the rule of law.

"President Trump is correct when he abjures the lack of leadership in many cities and states around the nation. The mobs of anarchists and criminals who have lost sight of the reason for what were once peaceful protests, have sensed the lack of will in the political leaders in so many places. The images and videos from around the country over the past week have exposed many mayors and governors as weak and unwilling to enforce laws to protect their citizens.

"As President Trump stated, Americans must hold their local officials to account for these unacceptable and unnecessary lapses of the rule of law.

"I respect the right to peacefully and lawfully protest, but condemn those who are attempting to burn down our country. I support law enforcement's efforts to restore the rule of law and to protect life and property. I join millions across the country in praying for peace, justice, and a swift conclusion of these riots."
