Congressman Ted S. Yoho (R-FL), Lead Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee for Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation, gave the following statement following President Trump's announcement that America will begin the process of ending its special relationship with Hong Kong and levy sanctions on key Hong Kong and Chinese officials while the Chinese Communist Party continues to rob Hong Kong of its autonomy.

"In 1997, the People's Republic of China made an internationally binding commitment to respect the autonomy and freedoms of Hong Kong. We are now witness as the Chinese Communist Party goes back on that commitment, nullifying another international agreement.

"I commend the Trump Administration for making the right decision in determining that Hong Kong lacks any semblance of autonomy from mainland China. The time is now for Congress and the Administration to work together in pushing back against Beijing's underhanded tactics and protect the people of Hong Kong."
