Congressman Kildee Announces Nearly $3 Million in Federal Grants to Mid-Michigan to Aid Homeless Amid Coronavirus

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced nearly $3 million in federal grants for mid-Michigan to provide emergency support for families and seniors who are homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless during the coronavirus pandemic.

The $2,972,240 in federal grants, awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, passed Congress as a part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The ESG program provides funding to improve the number and quality of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families, operate these shelters, provide essential social services to shelter residents, and prevent Michigan families and individuals from becoming homeless.

The federal grants announced today by Congressman Kildee will be awarded to these local mid-Michigan communities:

Genesee County will receive $913,288
Flint will receive $1,263,443
Saginaw will receive $795,509
"I am pleased to announce these grants to help some of the most-vulnerable Michiganders protect themselves against this public health and economic crisis," Congressman Kildee said. "I am working hard to bring home federal resources to mid-Michigan families, seniors, workers and small businesses."

This grant announcement continues Congressman Kildee's work to bring resources back to mid-Michigan during the coronavirus pandemic. In May, Congressman Kildee announced over $1.2 million in grants to help provide safe housing and services for individuals and families throughout mid-Michigan. In April, Congressman Kildee announced $7.8 million in Community Development Block Grants and ESG federal grants to bolster local relief efforts as our community responds to the coronavirus. He also announced nearly $4 million in federal grants for mid-Michigan behavioral health care in April. Previously, Congressman Kildee also announced almost $300,000 in federal grants to four local health centers in the Fifth Congressional District to help combat the coronavirus pandemic.
