Thompson Statement on Extending National Guard Deployment

Statement

Date: May 22, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Trump Administration sending mixed signals on the future of National Guard deployments to respond to COVID-19:

"The Administration needs to stop sending mixed signals to our States that continue to need National Guard assistance to respond to coronavirus. Having a hard stop, just to shortchange National Guard members, does not help us combat the virus and could lead to gaps in the support network the Administration already took too long to build these past two months. I urge the President to issue clear guidance that his Administration will extend the deployment, to assure both States and Guard members during the immediate future. We all know the pandemic will continue to affect states for months to come."
