Committee Democrats At Work: Rep. Lawson Pushes for Moratorium on Debt Collection During COVID-19 Crisis

Statement

Date: May 5, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

In March, Committee Democrats led by Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, released the Financial Protections and Assistance for America's Consumers, States, Businesses, and Vulnerable Populations Act (H.R. 6321), legislation to provide a comprehensive stimulus and public policy response to the coronavirus pandemic.

This legislation executes the comprehensive plan released by Chairwoman Waters and Committee Democrats in March 2020.

H.R. 6321 includes provisions to protect consumers, renters, homeowners, and people experiencing homelessness, including a bill from Congressman Al Lawson (D-FL) to prohibit debt collection, repossession and garnishment of wages during the pandemic.

See below for what Congressman Lawson had to say about his legislation.

"In light of the global coronavirus pandemic, and the economic hardship it will bring, my bill would suspend debt collections activity for 120 days to allow families and businesses an opportunity to get back on their feet. This would give working Americans, small business and non-profits another tool in the recovery process."

Chairwoman Waters and Financial Services Committee Members continue their efforts to ensure their critical legislation is included in the ongoing legislative response to the coronavirus crisis.
