McEachin Condemns Killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police, Calls For Justice

Statement

Date: May 29, 2020
Location: Richmond, VA

Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) today issued the following statement regarding the death of George Floyd and overnight protests in Minneapolis, MN.

"George Floyd died because despite his pleas, a public safety officer stepped on his neck for seven minutes -- the latest in a string of senseless deaths of black Americans at the hands of law enforcement officers meant to protect them.

"I do not condone violent protests or destruction of property, but let's be clear -- the unrest in Minnesota is a reflection of what we already know: the time to address the long-simmering frustration in communities of color with the racism deeply-ingrained in American culture is long overdue.

"The justice system must begin demanding accountability from LEOs to the same laws they are sworn to uphold. Today's arrest and criminal charges filed against the officer who took Mr. Floyd's life are the first steps toward justice in Minnesota.

"Our communities cannot continue to be targeted and killed without consequences."
