Rep. Grijalva Celebrates New Grant for Electric Buses for City of Tucson

Statement

Today, the Federal Transit Administration awarded the City of Tucson a $3,757,100 grant to purchase new zero-emission buses for the city's Sun Tran public transportation system. In early March 2020, Rep. Grijalva wrote a letter in support of the grant to the FTA highlighting the City of Tucson's efforts to modernize the public transportation fleet.

"Modernizing out transportation infrastructure is critical to safeguarding public health, improving air quality, and investing in the long-term health of our communities," said Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. "Sun Tran serves over 15 million passengers annually, and this grant allows them to continue investing in critical public transportation infrastructure that connects residents to critical resources while creating new jobs in the process. I'm proud to support this grant and remain dedicated to securing federal resources that will improve the lives of Tucsonans."

Rep. Grijalva has supported numerous efforts to continue investing in public transportation in Tucson. In July 2019, Rep. Grijalva helped secure a $2.6 million grant that the city used to purchase its first electric buses.

"I am grateful for the advocacy and leadership of our Congressional Delegation in securing this funding to help promote a sustainable future for Tucson," said Mayor Regina Romero. "This funding will allow Tucson to expand our electric bus fleet with five additional SunTran buses in order to promote a more sustainable and resilient future. These buses are an important step in reducing our city's carbon footprint, keeping our air clean, and protecting public health, especially for disadvantaged and vulnerable communities. I look forward to continuing our partnership with Tucson Electric Power to get these buses on the road and in service for our community."
