Congressman Kildee Announces $19 Million Federal Grant to Flint Mass Transportation Authority - Federal Grant Would Support Transportation Services During Pandemic

Press Release

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced a $19 million federal grant to Flint Mass Transportation Authority (MTA). The funds will be used to operate, maintain, and manage the public transportation system during the coronavirus public health emergency.

The $19 million federal grant, through the U.S. Department of Transportation, is a result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), the third bipartisan emergency aid bill supported by Congressman Kildee and signed into law March 27, 2020. The Flint MTA is a transit hub vital for Flint and Genesee County. The system helps Michiganders travel throughout the region.

"Essential workers and residents need access to reliable transportation, including to get to work, shop at the grocery store and see their doctor. This federal grant will help to ensure continued public transportation for our community," Congressman Kildee said. "I am proud to announce this federal grant to help Flint Mass Transit Authority maintain safe and reliable transportation services for both riders and drivers."

Congressman Kildee has supported improving Michigan's public transportation and infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and railroads, since his election to Congress. Congressman Kildee in March announced an $7.8 million federal grant to improve Lake State Railway's railroad infrastructure. Recently in 2019, Congressman Kildee also announced an $8 million federal grant to improve Flint Bishop Airport's primary runway.
