Tipton Lambastes Pelosi's Partisan Spending Bill

Statement

Date: May 15, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today Congressman Scott Tipton (CO-03) voted against a $3 trillion spending bill loaded with Democrat-supported priorities, many of them irrelevant to COVID-19 relief. The vote on the more than 1,800-page legislation comes less than three days after it was unveiled, with little to no input from Republicans who were not included in the drafting process. Tipton lambasted the bill, calling it a "hyper-partisan non-starter that wastes time when the American people need serious actions to be taken,' and released the following statement:

"As millions of Americans continue to worry about their futures and livelihoods, Speaker Pelosi is wasting valuable time by forcing Congress to vote on a laundry list of her own personal political priorities. Americans are looking for Congress to help stabilize the economy and continue addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. Families do not want to be used as political pawns as the more extreme socialist wing of the Democratic party tries to force their misguided and destructive policies on them. Prior to unveiling this massive bill, Speaker Pelosi kept the House closed, failed to allow congressional hearings to examine how effective existing--and not yet fully spent--relief funds are helping Americans, and thwarted any bipartisan efforts that would have a better chance at becoming law. I urge the Speaker to fully open Congress back up and allow us to do our jobs on behalf of the American People which can be done safely and with appropriate social distancing."

Some of Tipton's concerns about the bill include, but are not limited to:

Inclusion of a massive tax break for West and East Coast millionaires and billionaires by repealing SALT limitations for 2020 and 2021;
Taxpayer bailout of failing multi-employer pension plans that have long been mismanaged;
Lacks longstanding language that prevents taxpayer funded abortions; * Creates an incentive for people to remain unemployed by extending the enhanced federal unemployment program through at least through Jan. 31, 2021;
No longer requires recipients of economic rebate checks to hold a valid social security number.
