Pelosi: There Must be an Independent Inquiry into Justice Department Rubberstamp of Illegal Texas Redistricting Scheme'
Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the Justice Department memo reported by The Washington Post today on Congressman Tom DeLay's illegal redistricting scheme in Texas:
"There must be an independent inquiry into the contemptible politicization of the Justice Department to rubberstamp Congressman Tom DeLay's illegal redistricting scheme in Texas.
"The Justice Department memo reveals a cynical manipulation of the democratic process designed to deny fair representation to millions of American citizens. It is inconsistent with our great democracy, and deserves a thorough and independent investigation.
"The Republican legislature in Texas redistricted the state to increase the Republican Congressional delegation by five seats, trampling on the rights of millions of Americans - including millions of African-American and Hispanic-American voters. The non-partisan legal staff at the Justice Department concluded that the DeLay plan clearly violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by diluting the voting rights of minority citizens. But the political appointees at the Department of Justice rejected that unanimous finding and approved the discriminatory DeLay plan.
"Yet again, the corrupt Republican Congress benefits their cronies and the American people are paying the price. The few votes by which the misguided Republican agenda has passed are the result of this blatant abuse of the redistricting process."
