Veterans Coronavirus Bill Now Law

Statement

Date: May 4, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Veterans now have more protection, if the coronavirus disrupts their vocational rehabilitation and employment program. The President signed into law Tuesday my legislation, H.R. 6262 , that I piggybacked on to the larger Student Veteran Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 during House passage last month. The Veterans Administration may now keep paying a veteran's housing and subsistence allowances, if the school providing vocational rehabilitation closes before the end of the term. We also provide two additional months of subsistence allowance to veterans in VR&E, who may need more time to find a job with the economy shut down. And veterans will not lose eligibility time for education support, if they do not receive credit for classes cut short by the coronavirus. In addition, the larger Student Veteran Coronavirus Response Act recognizes some student veterans will be unable to make the transition if their school moves to online learning during the crisis. Those veterans, too, will keep their housing allowance. And the Act allows the VA to continue paying student veterans on work-study, even if they lose their on-campus job due to the coronavirus outbreak.
