Statement on COVID-19 Outbreak in South Fulton

Statement

Date: April 25, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

In response to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in South Fulton County, Representative John Lewis made the following statement:

"I am saddened beyond words to learn fifteen residents of a nursing home in South Fulton have died from Coronavirus. My heart breaks because this pandemic knows no limits and is robbing us of precious moments with those whom we most cherish. My thoughts are with their families and loved ones as they begin to process the loss of their beloved. I cannot imagine the families' pain and suffering during this dark hour, and they must know that we are grieving with them.

"As Members of Congress prepare a fourth legislative assistance package, it is painfully clear that we must focus on protecting seniors and assisted-living workers to ensure that they are protected, safe, and healthy. In particular, we must address the disproportionate impact that COVID-19 is having on communities of color. This pandemic is making it painfully clear that the inequities and inequality in our nation's healthcare system that I spent my entire career fighting require a national plan of action.

"These are difficult times, but we cannot -- we must not -- loss ourselves in the sea of despair. Each of us has a moral obligation to follow the guidance of health professionals, take care of each other, and ensure that the loss of our loved ones is not in vain."
