Congressman Biggs Votes to Protect Americans' Privacy and Fiscal Future

Statement

Date: April 23, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. Congressman Biggs voted against the bill and issued the following statement:

"The legislation passed today includes $12 billion to be distributed to state, local, and tribal jurisdictions for various purposes, including 'surveillance' and 'contact tracing.' The bill failed to define these terms, which have been used to spy on Americans.

"I prepared two amendments to address this problem, but, like everyone in the House of Representatives, was prohibited by Speaker Pelosi from offering amendments.

"It is reckless and dangerous for America's leaders to not only sanction abuse of the rights of Americans, but to borrow money to fund these violations.

"The current cure for the coronavirus is most definitely worse than the disease. Not only have we managed to create long-term economic and societal devastation for Americans due to the heavy-handed government response, Congress has added many trillions of dollars to our national debt and expanded our deficit. When we emerge from the health care response to this outbreak, we will be dealing with the consequences that we have inflicted upon ourselves for a very long time.

"How much longer will Americans acquiesce to unconstitutional and crushing government actions? The best cure for the nation is to open up America now. I call upon governors and political leaders at all levels of government to liberate their citizens. Trust the American people."
