At O'Halleran's Request, First Wave of Long Overdue CARES Act Funding Reaches AZ Tribes

Statement

Date: May 5, 2020
Location: Oak Creek, AZ

Today, following calls from Congressman Tom O'Halleran (AZ-01), as well as the voices of many concerned Arizonans, the U.S. Treasury announced that the first round of aid allocated for tribes under the CARES Act over a month ago would finally begin to be distributed to tribes. Following the Treasury's announcement that the first round of funding distributed would be only $4.84 billion of the allocated $8 billion, O'Halleran issued the following statement:

"Tribal communities across Arizona's First Congressional District have been waiting over a month for this funding. Per capita, the Navajo Nation is one of the biggest COVID-19 hotspots in our country and has been dangerously overlooked in the federal government's response. Though I am relieved to see at least a portion of these much-needed funds reach those that need them most, tribes need the rest of the aid they were promised, fast. They cannot wait another month. I will keep fighting for Indian Country."
