Congresswoman Susan Davis Cosponsors Legislation to Provide Recurring Relief Payments to Americans

Statement

As many American families struggle financially during the fight to defeat the coronavirus, Congresswoman Susan Davis (CA-53) cosponsored legislation that will provide recurring cash payments to Americans impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

"The relief payments sent to Americans under the CARES Act should not be a one-and-done event," said Rep. Davis. "American families are sacrificing financial stability to save lives and end this crisis. We have an obligation to recognize those actions with the economic support they will need to survive this pandemic. More help must be in the wings."

The Emergency Money for the People Act (H.R. 6496) would provide a $2,000 monthly payment to every qualifying American over the age of 16 until employment returns to levels prior to the pandemic. It also extends these payments to college students and adults with disabilities, who were excluded from the CARES Act, even if they are claimed as a dependent.

Under H.R. 6496, Americans aged 16 and older with an income of less than $130,000 annually would receive a monthly payment of $2,000. Married couples earning less than $260,000 would get $4,000 per month.

An additional $500 would go to qualifying families with children. These families will see payments for up to three children, meaning a married couple with three children would receive $5,500 per month.

Americans with no earnings or were unemployed, or those who are currently unemployed would also be eligible for relief.

In addition to cosponsoring H.R 6496, Davis is a cosponsor of the All Dependent Children Count Act and has been pushing for any future relief packages to include help for the United States Postal Service. Davis is also fighting for greater assistance for nonprofits, including the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.
