Doyle Reaction to Unemployment Report

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (PA-18) issued the following statement after the latest unemployment numbers were released this morning.

"This morning's unemployment report was shocking even if it was expected. Millions of Americans have been thrown out of work by the coronavirus pandemic and the measures taken to stop its spread.

"These hardworking Americans and their families will face economic uncertainty as well as concerns about the coronavirus in the weeks and possibly months ahead, and I believe that it's the government's responsibility to ensure that they get the support they need until this pandemic is over and our economy gets back on track.

"Last night, the Senate passed legislation that, among other things, would increase unemployment compensation by $600 per week for the next 4 months, expand the Unemployment Insurance program to cover independent contractors and individuals who are self-employed, and provide direct financial assistance to all individuals with incomes up to $100,000 and families with incomes of up to $200,000.

"I fully support these efforts to hold as many Americans as possible harmless from income losses caused by the pandemic. I believe that more will need to be done - and I will be working - to keep all Americans safe and financially secure while we weather this terrible storm together."
