Check out the plans for the new C & D Canal Recreational Trail

By: Delaware Congressman Mike Castle

Imagine being able to bike ride or jog on a Saturday afternoon with your family on a beautiful trail along the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal; or being able to fish with easy access at a refurbished pier. In a couple of weeks, I will be showing the conceptual designs for a multi-purpose trail, which will hopefully allow every resident in the area to experience the C&D Canal in a whole new light.

After holding public meetings earlier this year with area residents to learn about how they would like to see recreational opportunities enhanced along the Canal, my office has worked with the Army Corps of Engineers, a landscape architecture firm, and other state and local organizations in Delaware and Maryland to bring together a conceptual design for the project, that includes a multi-purpose trail along the Canal, parking lots and restroom facilities, interactive educational opportunities, and improved access points to the Canal. All of this will enhance the existing trail along the Canal while complimenting already existing activities, like fishing, dog training, hunting, and horseback riding.

As communities continue to grow and develop throughout Delaware and Maryland, this project becomes increasingly important to all residents of New Castle County and to all Delawareans who value open spaces and who would like access to more recreational areas.

I would appreciate your thoughts and input on the design when I come to the Gunning Bedford Middle School cafeteria in Delaware City on December 5. When the project is completed, I want to make sure that the project fits the needs of every resident in the area.

Monday, December 5, 5 to 8 p.m.
