Rep. Joyce: I Will Always Stand for Freedom

Statement

Date: Feb. 27, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

This afternoon, Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13) condemned Senator Bernie Sanders for his reprehensible comments praising Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, the murderous leader of a violent and oppressive regime. Alongside fellow House Republicans, Congressman Joyce requested consideration of a resolution disapproving of Senator Sanders' remarks.

Read his remarks:

This afternoon, I voted to condemn Senator Bernie Sanders for his disgraceful comments praising Fidel Castro and his communist regime in Cuba.

As one of the cruelest dictators in world history, Fidel Castro is responsible for vast human rights abuses, forced indoctrination, and oppressive authoritarian actions.

It is alarming that a sitting senator in America -- the greatest democracy in the world -- would even consider praising such a horrendous regime.

Though House Democrats blocked this resolution condemning Senator Sanders, we sent a clear message to the American people: We will not stand for oppression. We will not stand for tyranny. We will not stand for a communist agenda.

Here's the bottom line: Our nation is facing a stark choice between freedom and oppression. As your Congressman, I will continue fighting to protect our liberty, defend our Constitution, and ensure that every American remains free.

The American people should know where every Member of Congress stands -- with freedom or with Senator Sanders.

My answer is clear. I will always stand for freedom.
