Rep. Tipton Votes Against Pelosi Resolution on Military Force in Iran

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on a resolution to send a "sense of Congress' to President Trump that his administration should terminate the use of military force in or against Iran's military or government. This follows less than a week after the drone strike to kill General Quassem Soleimani, who lead Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, a militant group recognized by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization. Tipton voted against the measure and released the following statement:

"I do not support Nancy Pelosi's PR campaign to undermine President Trump's every action. This non-binding statement is her latest example of her caucus' incessant quibbling with this administration, this time an attempt to hinder efforts to protect Americans from active threats. Congress must maintain oversight of ongoing wars and future military action, but I understand the urgency an administration must have to strike quickly when a small window of opportunity presents itself as was the case with killing Osama bin Laden, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Quassem Soleimani and other high-profile terrorists. I remain committed to working with the administration on deterring further violence in the Middle East and around the world and focus on the safety of our troops and Americans at home."

Background:

The resolution, H. Con. Res. 83, is a concurrent resolution and has no binding legislative implications.

Soleimani led several proxy wars across the Middle East, provided arms and other explosive-making equipment to terror organizations that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Americans servicemembers, and most recently organized the protest and eventual storming of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The strike against Soleimani was made suddenly after he was traveling through Baghdad en route to other countries where he was plotting future attacks.
