Letter to the Hon. Donald J. Trump, President of the United States - unningham Invites President Trump to Tour Lowcountry Coastline during Friday's Visit to Charleston

Dear Mr. President:

I write to welcome you to our beautiful state of South Carolina in advance of your trip this Friday and invite you to join me on a tour of the Lowcountry coastline during your visit.

As the Lowcountry's Representative in Congress, I am humbled by the opportunity to be a steward of our vibrant natural resources, unique way of life, and thriving economy. Tourism is a $22.6 billion industry in South Carolina and supports one in every ten jobs in our state. Keeping our ocean healthy and our coastline free of oil rigs is critical for tourism, fishing, and recreation, which are crucial drivers of South Carolina's strong coastal economy. Not only does offshore drilling and seismic testing put the health of our ocean and our coastal economy at risk, it is a massive gamble on a future of dirty and dangerous oil exploration that the people of the Lowcountry overwhelmingly oppose.

I was optimistic when I saw that the White House's FY21 budget placed a hold on the 2019-2024 National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program, and I'm proud to know South Carolina's bipartisan opposition to offshore drilling played a crucial role in the hold. I am hopeful that upon touring our Lowcountry coastline, you will see why there is such united opposition to offshore drilling and seismic airgun blasting along the coast of South Carolina.

I look forward to the possibility of touring my beautiful district with you, and I hope you can find time to join me. If such a meeting is possible, please have your staff reach out to my district office directly for scheduling at 843-352-7572.

With kind regards, I remain

Very truly yours,

Joe Cunningham
