Statement by congressman Dan Kildee on Trump Administration proposal to block grant Medicaid expansion

Statement

Date: Feb. 7, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution disapproving of Trump Administration's plan to turn the Medicaid expansion created by the Affordable Care Act into a block grant program:

"Hundreds of thousands of Michiganders have quality, affordable health care because of Michigan's successful Medicaid expansion. Sadly, the Trump Administration is continuing its sabotage of the Affordable Care Act. By turning Medicaid expansion into a block grant program, many Michigan families who currently have coverage may lose their insurance. Instead of taking away health care coverage, the President should work with Democrats in Congress to expand health care access, protect coverage for pre-existing conditions and lower costs for prescription drugs."

On January 29, 2020, Congressman Kildee joined his 35 of his colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma outlining concerns with the potential health effects and legality of any Medicaid block grant proposal.
