Kaptur Announces Almost $1 Million in Federal Funding for a Toledo Small Business

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, announced $999,970 in federal investments for Integrated Sensors, LLC, located in Toledo, Ohio. The funding was provided by the Department of Energy (DOE) through DOE's Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. As subcommittee chair responsible for funding the Department of Energy, Rep Kaptur has increased investments at DOE to advance human understanding of physics, chemistry, and biological systems. On February 5, 2020, Rep. Kaptur held a Subcommittee hearing on the DOE's role in advancing biomedical sciences.

"These funds represent a critical investment in scientific innovation that will provide unique benefits down the road for human medical advancement, high-tech industries, and nuclear physics," said Rep. Kaptur. "The Department of Energy has a crucial role in advancing biomedical sciences at the intersection of energy and health. In addition, we know the role that small businesses play across our district in creating new ideas and jobs, and we are pleased that Integrated Sensors, LLC of Toledo has received this award."

"Integrated Sensors is currently working under a $2,043,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute for application of this technology to external beam radiation therapy for treatment of cancer, with interest by several radiotherapy equipment providers and top cancer treatment centers in the U.S. and Europe," said Peter S. Friedman, President & CTO of Integrated Sensors, LLC. "This additional federal funding from DOE will only strengthen our important efforts."

Integrated Sensors, LLC, have a high performance scintillator and beam monitoring system that will benefit from the research and development funding. Nuclear and high energy physics, high-tech industries, and medical treatment of cancer can all benefit by next-generation detectors for particle accelerators, and Integrated Sensors, LLC has demonstrated a new material and has designed a novel beam monitor for this material to enable enhanced particle accelerator performance.

The DOE's Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs were created by Congress to leverage small businesses to advance innovation at federal agencies. Small businesses play a major role in invention and creating jobs in the U.S. economy.
