Kinzinger is Consistent on AUMF to Protect America

Statement

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 236-166 on the House Amendment to Senate Amendment to H.R. 550 -- To repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) Against Iraq Resolution of 2002. Although he was unable to vote while on Air Guard duty this week, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) has been consistent on supporting the AUMF to give the President of the United States, regardless of political party, the power to protect America against terrorism.

The Congressman has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution, and as such, he has continually argued for this institution to retain its rights and exercise discretion in declaring war while still honoring the intent of our Founding Fathers in authorizing one Commander in Chief, not 535.

As Congressman Kinzinger has said before, the AUMF authorizes the use of military force with regards to terrorism. It does not authorize endless wars, as some have suggested. Instead, he argues, the AUMF is a necessary check on Presidential war powers that recognizes and supports the president's authority to defeat an enemy determined to harm us.
