Mucarsel-Powell's Statement On Trump's Budget Proposal

Statement

Today, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26) released the following statement on President Trump's proposed budget:

"This budget proposal shows just how little regard President Trump has for South Florida's workers, middle-class families, and environment. The president's latest budget continues his ruthless attacks on health care by making drastic cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, the Children's Health Insurance Program, and Social Security. It makes reckless cuts to public education and affordable housing programs, which help families in our district move up the economic ladder.

"While the president's budget proposal fully funds our bipartisan Florida delegation request for $250 million for the Everglades Restoration, his undermining of the Environmental Protection Agency puts South Florida's drinking water and environment at risk. I will continue advocating for full funding for the Everglades restoration and stronger measures to ensure Floridians have clean drinking water and pristine ecosystems.

"I cannot support a budget that overwhelmingly abandons South Florida's needs and values. The budget I will support and send to the president's desk will include funding for affordable and accessible quality health care, bold action on climate change, and programs that uplift America's working and middle class."

President Trump's budget includes the following:

Cuts Department of Education funding by $6.2 billion, eliminates funding for after school programs and slashes funding for schools that serve low income communities.
Eliminates the Community Development Block Grant, making it harder for communities to address needs like safe housing, economic opportunities, and public facility improvements.
Eliminates the NeighborWorks America program, which plays an essential role in providing affordable housing development in communities across the nation, including in South Florida.
Eliminates NOAA's Climate Competitive Research program, reducing support for high-priority climate science and adaptation efforts.
Cuts FEMA federal assistance, primarily state and local grants critical for terrorism and disaster preparedness, by $746.9 million.
Zeroes out the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy and slashes the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program by $2.1 billion, undermining clean energy technology.
Slashes funding for Small Business Administration Entrepreneurial Development Grants, by $93 million, making it harder for small businesses to grow and compete.
Eliminates funding for Economic Development Administration grants, harming economic growth, innovation, and U.S. competitiveness.
Reduces the Department of Agriculture's rural broadband programs by $305 million, making it harder for rural communities to connect to the 21st century economy.
