Rep. Carson on Expectations for the State of the Union Address

Statement

Date: Feb. 4, 2020
Location: Washington D.C.

Congressman André Carson released the following statement in advance of President Trump's State of the Union Address:

"Tonight, I expect to hear the President claim that his policies and his leadership have made our nation greater. But this is not the reality for the majority of Hoosiers and Americans.

"He may claim that he is working to strengthen our nation's health care. Yet he continues his reckless assault on the Affordable Care Act, which would rip health insurance from millions of Americans, and once again give insurers the ability to deny coverage to people with preexisting conditions.

"He may claim our nation is safer under his watch. Yet all his immigration policies have accomplished are the separation of vulnerable children from their families who are seeking a better life and sealing our borders to people in need, simply because of their nationality or their faith.

"He may claim that our economy has never been better. Yet he continues to line the pockets of the super-rich, leaving generations of working families to grapple with his trillion dollar deficit.

"He may claim that every American's future is more secure under his Presidency, yet his attempts to gut lifelines like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, SNAP and school lunch programs will ensure the opposite.

"He may claim he wants to work with Democrats to bolster our nation's infrastructure. Yet his refusal to engage in productive, bipartisan dialogues on the topic show he is not truly interested in achieving this goal.

"In his three years in office, President Trump's far-right agenda, unabashed prejudice, and rampant corruption have hurt our nation and its reputation around the world. We desperately need to change course, and I expect his speech tonight will reveal this."
