Rep. Fulcher Applauds Senate Hearing to Protect Abortion Survivors

Press Release

By:
Date:
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Fulcher announced his support for yesterday's Senate hearing on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, a bill to ensure that babies who survive a botched abortion attempt are given proper medical care after being born alive.

"With Speaker Pelosi's refusal to allow the House to vote on this bill, I am so thankful for my Senate colleagues who have stood by our side on this fight to protect babies born alive after a failed abortion," commented Rep. Fulcher. "This is far beyond the abortion debate--this is about providing care to a baby who is born alive, instead of setting them aside left to die. This is something we should all be able to agree on."

Rep. Fulcher has been heavily involved in efforts to have the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act brought up for a vote in the House. Although Democrats have denied any official hearings on this bill, Republicans held a hearing on September 18th to hear from expert witnesses: Jill Stanek, RN, a nurse who in 1999 discovered a baby with Down syndrome born alive after a late-term abortion who was left in a dirty utility room to die; Dr. Robin Pierucci, MD, neonatologist and medical director of a 50-bed neonatal intensive care unit; Dr. Kathi Aultman, M.D., a retired Ob/Gyn and former abortion provider, and Tessa Longbons, an abortion statistics researcher. Rep. Fulcher's questioning can be watched here.

Rep. Fulcher also co-wrote a powerful op-ed with one of the witnesses, Dr. Kathi Aultman. The full article can be read here.

In May, Rep. Fulcher took to the House floor to offer a unanimous consent request to allow a vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, but Democrats refused the attempt and cut off his microphone. The speech in full can be viewed here.

In April 2019, Rep. Fulcher attended a press conference led by Whip Steve Scalise and met abortion survivor Melissa Ohden. In 2015, Ms. Ohden testified to the House Judiciary Committee, "You wouldn't know it by looking at me today, but in August of 1977, I survived a failed saline infusion abortion…. I know where children like me were left to die at St. Luke's Hospital--a utility closet. In 2014, I met a nurse who assisted in a saline infusion abortion there in 1976, and delivered a living baby boy. After he was delivered alive, she followed her superior's orders and placed him in the utility closet in a bucket of formaldehyde to be picked up later as medical waste after he died there, alone."
