Press Release

Date: Jan. 27, 2020
Location: Albany, NY

Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced that two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants are being awarded to the University at Albany (UAlbany) and SUNY System Administration totaling $758,701. The UAlbany grant funds research to investigate the changing chemical process occurring within clouds in the Northeastern United States. SUNY System Administration is receiving a grant to accelerate the industry and development of Deep Technologies (deep tech) that would further scientific discoveries and engineering advancements.

"The vision and dedication of these local researchers, professors and students in STEM fields promises a bright future for our Capital Region and beyond," Congressman Tonko said. "These pioneering efforts affirm our region as a beacon that lifts our entire nation to a higher standard of scientific achievement. Congratulations to all involved for the success and creativity of the projects that earned these well-deserved awards. My thanks to the National Science Foundation for their continued support of research and discovery across our Capital Region."

UAlbany is being awarded $683,701 towards research on the fundamental change in the chemical composition of clouds in the northeastern United States over recent years and decades. The project is led by Dr. Sara Lance, a Research Associate for the UAlbany Atmospheric Science Research Center (ASRC).

SUNY System Administration is being awarded $75,000 to fund a workshop addressing the industry of deep technologies (deep tech) and foster partnerships between key leaders and stakeholders in order to expedite advancement of scientific discoveries. Dr. Grace Wang, Senior Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, is leading the project.

"We are thrilled to see Dr. Lance awarded with such an important recognition by the National Science Foundation. Her research at Whiteface Mountain will be critical to improving our understanding of cloud chemistry and its impact on climate, visibility and human health," said University at Albany Vice President for Research James A. Dias. "This award yet again shows UAlbany attracts the highest caliber of young scientists across a wide range of research disciplines."

Created by Congress in 1950, the NSF is an independent federal agency that supports research to develop and innovate cutting edge technologies in physics, mathematics, cybersecurity, neuroscience, and STEM education. The agency is currently responsible for funding 24 percent of all federally backed research at national colleges and universities.
