Lowey Supports War Powers Resolution to Reclaim Congress' Role in Authorizing Military Action

Statement

"One of Congress' most sacred constitutional duties is to make an educated, evidence-based decision on whether or not to authorize military action. We owe it to our men and women in uniform to not take this decision lightly. But this Administration has, once again, ignored Congress' role as a co-equal branch of government, failing to consult with or notify Congress in advance of its reckless strike that killed Iranian Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani.

"That is why I'm proud to cosponsor and vote for the War Powers Resolution, which would require the President to obtain Congressional authorization before taking military actions against Iran without limiting the President's ability to respond to an imminent attack. The President's actions put us on the brink of war. While tensions seem to have deescalated for now, the American people deserve a public debate before the U.S. enters into another Middle East war.

"Additionally, the information the Administration has provided to Congress is insufficient. The Administration must work with Congress to implement real diplomacy aimed at bolstering American interests and global stability."
