Statement

Date: Jan. 9, 2020
Location: Washington D.C.
Issues: Defense

Congressman Bobby Scott issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.Con.Res. 83 -- Directing the President pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution to terminate the use of United States Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran:

"Last week, the Trump Administration killed a high-level Iranian military official. This provocation almost led us to the brink of war. Yesterday, the Trump Administration attempted to brief Congress on the intelligence they used to justify the attack. What was presented to Congress yesterday was woefully inadequate to justify choosing such a course of action. That is why the vote today by the House of Representatives was so important. Members of Congress and Americans have grave concerns about the Trump Administration's willingness to engage in hostilities with Iran without legal justification. Now is the time for the Administration to work with Congress on a strategy to de-escalate hostilities and prevent further violence. We cannot afford another unending war."
