Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement marking the 47th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

"As we mark the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision cementing a women's right to choose, we cannot lose sight of the efforts to undermine the tremendous progress we've made in promoting reproductive justice. With some states working to rollback this progress, the hard fought gains we've made in reproductive health are now more tenuous than ever.

"As a longtime member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus with a 100% pro-choice voting record, I feel it's important for me to speak out against the incessant attacks on women's autonomy and health we see, not just in Washington, but across the country. The President and his anti-choice allies in Congress will not succeed in dragging our country back to 1973. For these reasons, I have cosponsored legislation such as the Women's Health Protection Act and EACH Woman Act, which will ensure that decisions about a women's health are made by her and her doctor. Last December, I also joined 161 of my Democratic House colleagues on an amicus brief to the Supreme Court for the upcoming case of June Medical Services LLC v. Gee, urging the court to strike down the Louisiana state law aimed at undermine a woman's right to choose. Protecting and expanding access to reproductive health must be a priority for Congress."
