Doyle Votes to Repeal 2002 War Authorization

Statement

U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (PA-18) voted in favor of legislation to reaffirm Congress' role to declare war and repeal the resolution authorizing the use of military force (AUMF) against Iraq.

"I voted against the War in Iraq in 2002 -- and I voted to repeal the 2002 resolution authorizing military action in that country today," said Congressman Doyle. "We are no longer at war with Iraq, and this AUMF should not be used to start a war with Iran. I also voted to prohibit military action against Iran without authorization from Congress, with the exception of responding to an attack upon the United States or its armed forces. Congress has the power to declare war, and we should make decisions about Iran strategically, thoughtfully, and Constitutionally."

The Khanna Amendment reiterated that only Congress has the Constitutional authority to declare war -- and that it has not authorized the use of military force against Iran. It prohibits federal funding for any use of military force in or against Iran unless Congress declares war or enacts a specific authorization that meets the requirements of the War Powers Resolution. This measure passed the House by a vote of 288-175.

The Lee (CA) Amendment would repeal the AUMF of 2002 in order to ensure that it is not improperly used to legitimize military action in another country. This measure passed the House by a vote of 236-166.

The amendment legislation must now be considered by the Senate.
