Conaway: Allowing Huawei Access to 5G Networks a Mistake

Statement

Congressman Mike Conaway (TX-11) released a statement following the United Kingdom's decision to continue contracting Huawei to build parts of its 5G network:

"I am disappointed that the U.K. has chosen to move forward with Huawei equipment for its 5G network development, despite the known security risks of partnering with a company controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. By allowing Huawei access to even the periphery of its 5G networks, the United Kingdom is not only compromising the security of their nation, but of all countries within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

"The U.S. and our allies must continue to recognize the grave national security risk of allowing the Chinese Communist Government to access our 5G networks and work to promote secure telecommunication alternatives."

Congressman Conaway has long warned of the risks of partnering with Chinese telecommunications companies such as Huawei. Conaway's legislation to protect government communications from Chinese spying, the Defending U.S. Government Communications Act, was included in the FY2019 National Defense Authorization Act. In a 2019 BBC documentary, Conaway also expressed concerns about the U.K. using Huawei parts in the development of their 5G networks.
