Congressman Mitchell votes against H.R. 535

Statement

Date: Jan. 10, 2020
Issues: Environment

Congressman Paul Mitchell released this statement after voting against H.R. 535, the PFAS Action Act:

"Michiganders know better than most the risks posed to human health and the environment by contaminants like PFAS. Urgent attention is required to understand, evaluate, and clean up contamination where it exists. That is what the EPA is currently doing through its PFAS Action Plan, the coordinated federal effort to develop evidence and science-based standards for these chemicals.

Unfortunately, the PFAS Action Act ignores this ongoing work and hurriedly establishes standards that may be infeasible or inappropriate for state and local governments and other entities. This legislation circumvents careful consideration of the best available science and the EPA's ongoing work. Accordingly, I voted against the PFAS Action Act."
