Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-6) issued the following statement supporting the introduction of the War Powers Resolution amid escalating tension between the United States and Iran. Congresswoman Matsui is an original co-sponsor of this legislation, which will advance to the full House of Representatives.

"Today, I took part in a classified briefing regarding the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, the events that influenced that decision, and the retaliatory attacks carried out in its wake. It is clear to me that the decision to kill him was a dangerous move that could destabilize the region, put American lives at risk, and escalate to war," said Congresswoman Matsui, Sacramento's voice in Congress. "Another endless war is not an option, and Congress has an important Constitutional oversight role to play in preventing that from happening again. That's why I am joining my colleagues today in introducing the War Powers Resolution. This resolution grants our military the right to defend itself against enemy incursions, while limiting the President's ability to enter into a decades-long conflict that will lead to unnecessary American casualties."
