Reed Statement on Shooting at U.S. Naval Base

Statement

Date: Dec. 6, 2019
Location: Washington D.C.

Today, after a Saudi military trainee shot and killed multiple people at Naval Air Station Pensacola before the gunman was shot dead by officers responding to the scene, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), Ranking Member of the Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:

"There is still a lot we don't know about today's shooting, and right now the focus should be on the deceased and wounded, and supporting those impacted by this tragedy. Our hearts are with the victims, the Navy community, and the Escambia County Sheriff's office whose deputies were wounded stopping the gunman.

"We have a lot of questions and there must be a full, thorough investigation into this senseless attack. The FBI and other federal agencies are working hard to get to the bottom of it. And we are still awaiting facts and answers from the ongoing investigation into the recent shooting at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii as well.

"There needs to be a review of on base weapons policies.

"At some point, President Trump and members of Congress must summon the political courage and take meaningful action to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a threat to others."
