Today, Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01) voted to pass the PFAS Action Act, bipartisan legislation that would designate all Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals as hazardous substances and allow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up contaminated sites in South Carolina and across the country.

The EPA currently does not list any PFAS as hazardous substances under the Superfund program, which allows the EPA and federal agencies to clean up contaminated sites. By making this listing, the EPA will be able to direct federal resources to clean up contaminated sites and limit the spread of these dangerous substances.

"There is no responsibility I take more seriously than ensuring the health and wellbeing of my constituents," said Rep. Joe Cunningham. "Hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians have been unwittingly exposed to toxic PFAS chemicals for decades. PFAS contamination represents a clear and present danger to families across our state. This bipartisan legislation ensures we are treating PFAS with the seriousness it deserves and gives agencies the resources they need to clean up our communities.
